Russia's Bitcoin Miners Under Scrutiny: Concerns Over Data Security and New Regulations

Russian Bitcoin miners are facing increased scrutiny with a new government registry that mandates the disclosure of sensitive details such as cryptocurrency wallet addresses. Since its launch in November 2024, the registry has raised fears of data breaches, potentially exposing miners to international sanctions. Despite assurances of tight security within a specialized internal system, past data breaches in Russia contribute to ongoing doubts among the mining community. Anton Gorelkin, a key Russian lawmaker, has highlighted the severe implications of potential leaks, stating that they could benefit geopolitical rivals and isolate the Russian mining sector further. Additionally, the Federal Tax Service's control extends to enforcing limits on electricity use and potentially establishing a national database for mining hardware. Together, these measures exacerbate the uncertainty and regulatory challenges facing Russian Bitcoin miners amidst growing international scrutiny and sanctions.
