SEC Review Could Soften Stance on Crypto Regulations Amid Financial Sector Pushback
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is reassessing its stance on cryptocurrencies through a revision of custody rules that previously drew significant industry backlash. Acting Chairman Mark Uyeda, addressing the Investment Company Institute’s 2025 Investment Management Conference, highlighted this policy reevaluation in response to extensive concerns from financial bodies and crypto stakeholders. Originally initiated under the Biden administration, the contentious rule proposed stringent custody requirements for crypto assets, demanding that they be held by qualified custodians. This proposal has met resistance from several quarters, including congressional Republicans, crypto companies, and traditional financial institutions, citing potential adverse impacts on business operations. In reconsidering this rule, the SEC might ease some of the constraints, helping to mollify the financial sector’s apprehensions and possibly fostering a more conducive environment for cryptocurrency innovation and security.
