EU Courts Next Battleground in Epic Quest to Recover Lost Bitcoin
A British man, James Howells, continues his relentless pursuit to retrieve approximately 8,000 bitcoins, now valued over $600 million, after accidentally discarding a hard drive containing them in 2013. His journey has hit another roadblock as the Royal Court of Appeal recently denied his latest appeal, leading him to take his fight to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). Howells, an IT engineer from Newport, has argued for years that he should be allowed to excavate a landfill where the hard drive is presumably buried, offering multiple solutions to address legal and environmental concerns; however, all proposals have been rejected by the local council. Despite the setbacks, Howells remains optimistic and committed to pursuing all possible legal avenues, firmly believing in the recovery of his digital fortune. His case, now advancing to an international human rights tribunal, highlights significant legal and ethical dimensions surrounding data recovery and property rights in the digital age. Whether the ECHR will hear his case is yet to be determined.
