India Ramps Up Efforts in Crypto Scam Crackdown with Tech Giants' Aid
India is escalating its fight against cryptocurrency scams, specifically targeting the 'pig butchering' fraud, with the support of major tech companies Google and Facebook. The Indian government's 2024 report highlights that these scams predominantly affect vulnerable demographics, including unemployed youths and financially burdened individuals, luring them with promises of quick financial returns. Google and Facebook are being utilized by cyber criminals to propagate fraudulent schemes and phishing operations through ads. In response, the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) is collaborating with these tech platforms to track and mitigate these cybercrimes. Google's integration with the Citizen Financial Cyber Frauds Reporting and Management System has successfully intercepted and recovered over ₹16 billion, benefiting numerous victims. Both tech giants are essential in the process of identifying and eliminating suspicious apps and scam advertisements. Additionally, the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal has been established to allow citizens to report financial frauds and related cybercrimes. These measures are part of a broader effort to equip law enforcement with tools to track blockchain transactions and dismantle networks involved in digital asset fraud. India's proactive stance and regulatory measures have positioned it as a leader in global crypto adoption, reflecting the country's commitment to combating cybercrime while fostering technological innovations.
