Nasdaq ISE Proposes SEC-Approved Expansion for Bitcoin ETFs on the Trading Floor
Nasdaq ISE has recently submitted a proposal to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) seeking to significantly raise the position and exercise limits for options on the iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) ETF. The exchange aims to increase the limits from 25,000 to 250,000 contracts due to increased market activity and growing trading volumes. This proposed amendment is intended to reflect the ETF’s burgeoning market presence, which now boasts a market cap of $46.8 billion and an average daily trading volume of 39.4 million shares. Comparatively, the new limit would constitute just 2.89% of IBIT’s outstanding shares, a figure much lower than similar ETFs such as SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) and iShares Silver Trust (SLV). Nasdaq ISE asserts that this adjustment is considerably more conservative than those applied to other ETFs, ensuring it aligns appropriately with market standards. The enhancement of these limits, if approved, is expected to bolster market liquidity and provide institutional investors with improved tools for risk management. This move aligns with Nasdaq ISE's broader strategy to expand its offerings in the digital assets space, which includes efforts to initiate Bitcoin options trading. This application follows on the heels of recent regulatory advancements, notably the SEC's approval allowing Nasdaq ISE to list options on BlackRock’s IBIT ETF.
