Switzerland Embraces Bitcoin: Spar Supermarkets Set to Accept Cryptocurrency Payments
Spar supermarkets in Switzerland are set to launch Bitcoin payments across the nation after a successful pilot program.
The initiative, powered by the crypto payments firm DFX Swiss, began with Spar's Zug location, which started accepting Bitcoin using the Lightning Network.
Shortly after, a second store in Kreuzlingen joined the movement, indicating a rapid expansion of cryptocurrency acceptance within this major supermarket chain.
The payment process is user-friendly, requiring customers to simply scan a QR code to complete transactions, as confirmed by Rahim Taghizadegan from the Bitcoin Association Switzerland.
This rollout positions Spar as one of the first major supermarket chains in Switzerland to integrate direct Bitcoin payments, aligning with the crypto-friendly reputation of the country.
However, opinions on Bitcoin in Switzerland remain divided, particularly regarding its viability for national reserves and economic integration.
Recently, the Swiss National Bank Chairman expressed skepticism about Bitcoin's volatility for reserve holdings.
On a more positive note, a citizen-led initiative is advocating for the Swiss Constitution to mandate the central bank to hold Bitcoin alongside gold.
Switzerland boasts a growing number of over 600 businesses accepting Bitcoin, highlighting its role as a leader in real-world cryptocurrency adoption in Europe.
As global trends show increasing acceptance of Bitcoin, Spar’s expansion could pave the way for more businesses to embrace cryptocurrency in everyday transactions.
