UK Bitcoin Scandal: NCA Officer Charged with Multi-million Dollar Theft

A UK National Crime Agency (NCA) officer, Paul Chowles, has been charged with the theft of 50 Bitcoin in 2017, which was valued at approximately $77,000 at the time but now worth around $4 million. The 42-year-old from Bristol faces 15 criminal charges, allegedly committing the theft during a probe into online organized crime. Chowles is accused of multiple offences including concealing and converting criminal property, in addition to acquiring and possessing said property. Set to appear in Liverpool Magistrates' Court on April 25, 2025, the legal proceedings are critical, with the CPS emphasizing the importance of a fair trial and urging restraint in public commentary to avoid prejudicing the case. Enhanced in 2024, the NCA's powers now include abilities to seize and destroy cryptocurrency linked to criminal activities, reflecting its intensified focus on cyber and economic crimes.
